Shipping Container Housing for Haiti

I ran into shipping container housing dot org which is planning a project for haiti with shipping containers.

They look like they are 20 foot containers and have a water collection system on top.  Notice the roof slants and the large “H20″ box above.

This is a pretty simple solution using lots of resources that are already around so I know that costs cannot be too high for a project like this although the website doesn’t give further details other than the architectural drawings.

The company’s mission is to provide affordable housing for those in need.  Quickly and safely.  Therefore they are trying to do this with the use of shipping containers because they are quick to implement and provide safe housing.

Small Houses Made Out of Plastic Bottles

A friend sent me a link to Houses that PET Built, which is an article written by Sebrina Smith on houses made out of plastic bottles.  In it she talks about the homes and shows us several interesting pictures of them.  What caught my eye though was not only the awesome pictures, but the comments…

Of course this is not a mainstream approach that everybody is going to want to use.  It’s not a solution for America, I agree with that.  But at least some people out there are making good use of materials that are otherwise considered trash.  And what about the homeless?  Third world countries?  Places where there is just people but not enough opportunities for them to rise out of their situation of homelessness.

This could be a great cause for places like that… Using our useless trash to help them build something.

So anyways, here’s a few shots of the bottle house creations.

Modern Hobbit House Video

Faircompanies has been publishing awesome videos on youtube related to small and recycled houses.  On this episode they are featuring a modern hobbit house which is a tiny cob home out in North Carolina’s Pickards Mountain Eco-Institute.

People have been building with cob for hundreds of years but it is currently being re-discovered.  The coolest part is that all of the clay from the house featured comes from materials within 50 feet of the house.

They have put a lot of thought into the design of the house like the direction it faces to keep the house comfortable (naturally) inside.  Enjoy the video!
